Brookside, called the "town burying ground," began its existence before the Civil War. It may have started as an  expansion of a family cemetery. "A"
section holds the oldest graves in the cemetery. During the Civil War, many Union soldiers died of disease while encamped in the town and were buried here. At the end of the war, their  bodies were removed to the National Cemetery in Lebanon. A church, some kind of Christian congregation, met in a building in the cemetery.
